Fernando Torres

Torres started his career with Atlético Madrid, with whom he progressed through the youth ranks. He made his professional debut in 2001 and finished his career with the club having scored 75 goals in 174 La Liga appearances. Prior to this, Torres played two seasons in the Segunda División, making 40 appearances and scoring seven goals. He joined Liverpool in 2007, after the club paid their record transfer fee to sign him and marked his first season with the club by being their first player to score more than 20 league goals for the club in a season since Robbie Fowler in 1995–96.

He is also a Spanish international and made his debut for the team against Portugal in 2003. He has since participated in three major tournaments; UEFA Euro 2004, 2006 FIFA World Cup and UEFA Euro 2008. He was unable to score for Spain during the 2004 tournament, but did so on three occasions in the 2006 World Cup. Torres scored the winning goal for Spain in their 1–0 win over Germany in the Euro 2008 final.

Wayne Rooney and Christiano Ronaldo - who is better?

Pic 1..... Wayne Rooney and Christiano Ronaldo - who is better? leave a comment.

Personally I can't decide who is better. Christiano is on fire at the minute, scoring with every kind of goal from every angle and tricks to bamboozle the finest of defenders. Wayne has always been brilliant, right from the very start everyone could see he was special. If you had to rely on one player and only 1 player I think you'd want Wazzer there as he has Man Utd red running through his once blue veins.

Mixed messages from Ronaldo cloud United triumph

MOSCOW (AFP) - The one cloud on Manchester United's horizon after their Champions League triumph here is the continuing uncertainty over the future of their most valuable asset, Cristiano Ronaldo.

As he has done consistently for the last year, the 23-year-old winger issued mixed messages about his future plans in the aftermath of what was a rollercoaster night for him in the Luzhniki Stadium.

Within minutes of having declared, "I am going to stay - there is no way I'm leaving after this," Ronaldo was qualifying that commitment with a reminder that, "the future ... no one knows."

Having headed United into the lead with his first goal against Chelsea, Ronaldo went on to have his penalty in the decisive shoot-out saved by Petr Cech.

With Chelsea having converted their first four spot-kicks, Ronaldo's miss gave John Terry the chance to win the trophy for his club.

But, to the intense relief of Ronaldo, the England defender struck his shot wide. After Edwin van der Sar's save from Nicolas Anelka finally gave United their win, United's biggest star appeared overcome by emotion, collapsing to the sodden turf in tears.

Ronaldo has been a consistent target for Real Madrid and strategic leaks to the Spanish media over the last week have resulted in headlines claiming that they are close to winning their battle to persuade the Portuguese star to quit United.

United manager Sir Alex Ferguson dismissed those claims as "stupid" earlier this week and declared himself willing to wager very large amounts of money on Ronaldo doing his stepovers at Old Trafford next season.

As he is only one year into a five-year contract, it would take a combination of a world record transfer fee and a clear demand from Ronaldo himself to persuade United to give up the player.

Real reportedly would not baulk at a fee of up to 100 million pounds (120 million euros), despite his protestations of being happy in the north of England, Ronaldo did not exactly rule out a change of heart.

"I don't promise nothing, I don't promise nothing to my mum, I don't promise nothing to the supporters," he said. "I want to stay, but the future... no-one knows. I want to stay. We are going to see in the next two weeks, I don't say I make a decision."

United are reported to be preparing a new contract for Ronaldo that will ensure his brilliant form this season is recognised by him becoming the club's best-paid player.

His first-half header on Wednesday was his 42nd strike of a season which has seen him take George Best's mantle as the most prolific winger/midfield player in the club's history.

Given that record of achievement over ten months, it would have been cruel if Ronaldo had ended up being dubbed the man who cost United the chance of a second Champions League trophy.

"Sometimes life is unfair and that would have have been so unfair on the boy, given his contribution the whole season for us," reflected United boss Sir Alex Ferguson.

Ronaldo also missed a penalty in the first leg of United's semi-final win over Barcelona, but Ferguson was quick to remind any potential critics that the winger had also held his nerve on plenty of occasions this season.

"You have to remember the courage he showed when he was made to retake the penalty against Arsenal and scored again," Ferguson said, rejecting a suggestion that Ronaldo had not produced his best form in the final.

"I felt he was fantastic for us against Chelsea. When he had the ball I always felt something was going to happen for us."

Joy in Manchester, riot in London after cliffhanger

by Guy Jackson 7 minutes ago

LONDON (AFP) - Manchester United fans prepared Thursday to welcome home their heroes after a dramatic Champions League victory in Moscow, as bitterly disappointed Chelsea fans began arriving back in London.

While thousands of United fans celebrated through Wednesday night in the northwest of England after the thrilling penalty shootout victory, furious Chelsea supporters clashed with police near the club's stadium in an upmarket district of London.

After a match that finished 1-1, Dutch goalkeeper Edwin van der Sar dived to save the decisive penalty from Chelsea's Nicolas Anelka and the title of European champions was United's for the third time.

Poignantly, the victory came 50 years after a Manchester United team was decimated when eight players were killed in an air crash in snowy Munich.

Thousands of fans who had packed pubs to watch the match poured into the streets of Manchester and red-shirted strangers hugged and performed a victory jig.

"It's absolutely fantastic and a fitting tribute. I will be celebrating with a bottle of champagne if I can find one," Wendy Andrews, 52, told reporters.

But for Chelsea the defeat was bitter, as they were denied a first Champions League crown which would have justified the hundreds of millions of pounds invested by billionaire Russian owner Roman Abramovich.

The club's emotions were summed up by the distraught reaction of captain John Terry, who had to be consoled by coach Avram Grant after he missed a decisive penalty when he slipped on the rain-soaked turf.

Back in Britain, hundreds of Chelsea supporters who had been drinking heavily in bars near the club's west London stadium reacted badly to the defeat late Wednesday.

Police sprayed tear gas to quell rioting and arrested 12 people after fans pelted officers with chairs and beer glasses. Five officers suffered minor injuries in the fracas.

"Shortly after the match ended, some people became noisy and abusive and bottles and street furniture were thrown," a spokesman for London's Metropolitan Police said.

In contrast, the majority of fans from both teams behaved well in Moscow.

But there was no disguising the sadness of Chelsea's followers as they touched down in Britain.

"I just burst into tears when Terry missed that penalty," said 18-year-old student Andrew Whelton after his flight arrived at Stansted airport.

The victorious United team were due back home late Thursday, but their arrival would not be followed immediately by the traditional victory parade through the streets.

City councillors decided last week to postpone any parade for several weeks after riots flared in the city during and following the UEFA Cup final between Scottish club Rangers and Russia's Zenit St Petersburg.

Manchester United chief executive David Gill said it was unfortunate that a parade was not on the cards immediately but that the club was considering its options.

"We were planning for that and then unfortunately some of the issues that came out of the UEFA Cup game a week last Wednesday meant that, in discussions with the two councils and (police), it was felt it was not appropriate to hold one," BBC online quoted him as saying.

"No doubt we will celebrate with our fans over the course of the summer months, we hope."

British newspapers handed the accolades to goalkeeper Van der Sar, with The Sun tabloid dubbing him "Van der Tsar," while the Mirror said his performance was "From Russia with Glove".

The Daily Telegraph's main football writer, Henry Winter, said the victory was "a beautiful way for United to mark the 50th anniversary of Munich, but what a brutal way for such an honest pro as John Terry to be treated by the sporting gods."

Manchester United win Champions League in penalty shootout

by Angus MacKinnon Thu May 22, 3:21 AM ET

MOSCOW (AFP) - Goalkeeper Edwin van der Sar was Manchester United's hero as Sir Alex Ferguson's side claimed the club's third European Cup with a penalty shoot-out win over Chelsea on a night of almost unbearable drama in Moscow.

As many had predicted, the competition's first all-English final ended in penalties and ultimately it was van der Sar's full-length save from Nicolas Anelka that ensured United won the shoot-out 6-5 after the match had ended 1-1 after extra-time.

The triumph ensured ensured a season that has seen United mark the 50th anniversary of the Munich air disaster ended with both the Premier League and Champions League trophies back at Old Trafford.

Ferguson too believed that Fate had played a role in the win.

"There is a certain sense of fate about this (50 years after the Munich air disaster and winning it in 1968)," said Ferguson.

"It is the first penalty shootout in a big game I've won!"

England midfielder Frank Lampard claimed that the wrong side had won the trophy.

"A small small detail that loses you the game," said Lampard, who has had a tough time of late with his mother dying.

"John slipped for the penalty. No-one could deny that after 3Oth minutes we dominated the game. But we have to take it on the chin."

Chelsea had their chance to claim the trophy for the first time after Cristiano Ronaldo had had his effort saved by Petr Cech. But captain John Terry pushed his spot-kick - Chelsea's fifth - wide of the target.

It was hard on the London club, who could justifiably claim to have come closest to winning the match in the two hours that preceded the dramatic finale.

It was also debatable whether Terry would have taken a penalty had Didier Drogba not been sent off shortly before the end of extra-time for tapping Nemanja Vidic on the face as several players on either side squared up to each other.

United's early domination had yielded a deserved opener in the form of Ronaldo's 26th-minute header, the Portuguese winger's 42nd goal of an extraordinary season.

But after failing to take the chances that followed, Ferguson's men were pegged back by Lampard's equaliser on the stroke of half-time.

Chelsea went on to dominate after the break and almost claimed a winner when Drogba's 25-yard shot came back off the post with van der Sar beaten.

Chelsea struck the woodwork again in the opening period of extra-time, Lampard's cute shot on the turn bouncing off the bar with United's goalkeeper once more struggling.

Substitute Ryan Giggs then had a glorious chance to mark his record-breaking 759th appearance for United in style but the veteran winger never really connected with Patrice Evra's cutback and Terry was able to head the ball to safety.

With the exception of Park Ji-Sung's exclusion from United's match-day squad, there were no suprises in the personnel on display, although Ferguson did tweak United's usual shape.

Owen Hargreaves was deployed on the right side of midfield with Ronaldo in the left-sided role that Park had been tipped to fill.

With Wayne Rooney and Carlos Tevez alongside each other in attack, Ferguson also departed from the lone-striker policy that has served United well in getting to the final, notably in the semi-final win over Barcelona.

Michael Essien's relative inexperience at right-back may have influenced United's thinking and it was the Ghanaian's poor positioning that enabled United to take the lead.

From his own throw-in on the right, Wes Brown combined with Scholes to escape from Lampard and the rightback was allowed to drift infield before curling a cross to the back post. Ronaldo had peeled off Essien and, with the luxury of an unchallenged header, directed the ball just inside the post.

The goal every neutral and television director had hoped for had the desired effect of bringing the match to life.

Michael Ballack fired a chance to equalise over the bar and United enjoyed a greater let-off minutes later when only an instinctive reflex save from van der Sar prevented Rio Ferdinand from heading into his own net as Ballack strained to reach Drogba's knockdown.

United hit back with Rooney sending Ronaldo clear on the left. The winger's cross was met by Tevez with a diving header that Cech blocked at close range but could not hold.

Terry scuffed the loose ball into the path of Michael Carrick but by the time the midfielder had driven it goalwards, Cech was on his feet and able to palm a poorly directed drive to safety.

United went close again three minutes from the break. Rooney's low cross from the right was cleverly directed into the space between Cech and his centrebacks and Tevez got a boot to it at full stretch but the ball spun wide of the target.

As the half drew to a close it was Chelsea who were in the ascendant but they still required a generous slice of luck to claim their equaliser as a result of a long-range shot from Essien that looked unlikely to trouble van der Sar.

After deflecting off the boot of Vidic, the ball rebounded off Ferdinand's back to leave Lampard with the simple task of tapping in from six yards.

Chelsea continued to dominate after the break, forcing Ferguson to pull Hargreaves into the middle of midfield with Rooney dropping deep on the right.

Still Chelsea pressed and Drogba, largely anonymous until then, almost conjured up a winner with 12 minutes left, his 25-yard drive curling beyond van der Sar's dive and onto the post.

Five minutes later, United finally produced a second-half shot. Tevez's effort was close but not close enough to prevent the match slipping towards the conclusion many had regarded as inevitable.

After the match, Chelsea boss Avram Grant insisted his side had done enough to lift the Champions League trophy after losing out to Manchester United in a final decided on penalties.

"It is very hard to lose on penalties. I don't know what to say, especially after - except for the first 30 minutes - we dominated the game," said Grant. "We hit the post, we hit the bar, we shot much more than them. Even in the penalties we came to the last one and it was in our hands - but we lost."
