Cristiano Ronaldo to submit transfer request, He is so far the best in Euro 2008

Cristiano ronaldo has significantly contributed to the success of Portugal in Euro 2008.

Cristiano Ronaldo has confided to friends that he is prepared to do “whatever it takes” to engineer a transfer to Real Madrid this summer. Manchester United maintain that they will not sell their most prized asset under any circumstances, but Ronaldo is dismissive of his club's views and regards his planned world-record transfer to Real as an inevitability.

Ronaldo appeared almost ambivalent about his future when, in a statement on June 4, he suggested that he would be happy to stay at United if no fee was agreed with Real, but the depth of his determination to leave Old Trafford is now becoming clear.

A source close to the player said last night that he had made clear he would do everything in his power to persuade United to sell. That could mean anything from submitting a formal transfer request to refusing to report for pre-season training, but his next step will be to issue a further statement, outlining his intentions, as soon as Portugal's participation in the European Championship finals is over.

The end of the tournament a week on Sunday - or Portugal's elimination, if that happens first - will trigger an escalation in the battle for Ronaldo, with Real planning to make a formal offer of about £60million.

That's a big amount of money, but it's worth it.

Ronaldo is the sexiest footballer in Euro 2008;

His performance on the pitch is undoubtedly impressive, but Cristiano Ronaldo can now add another accolade to his list of achievements.

The Portuguese striker has scored a goal with European women, who voted him the sexiest player of the current Euro 2008 tournament.

German website Spiegel Online reported that the 23-year-old Manchester United star topped the poll of 12,000 women, which was conducted on behalf of electronics company LG.

Cristiano Ronaldo is seemingly lead Portugal to be the Champion so Euro 2008

GENEVA — Cristiano Ronaldo whines like a toddler. He dives like a swan. He wears a perpetual smirk.

Ronaldo made a typically dazzling run that set up Portugal's first goal, struck a laser-beam drive for the second and dished off on a breakaway for the third in a 3-1 victory over the Czech Republic on Wednesday, putting his team in the quarter-finals of the European Championship.

And, of course, after he scored, he made one of those trademark winks with his right eye. The wink that says: "Ain't I great?" The wink he displayed after he helped get Manchester United teammate Wayne Rooney ejected from a World Cup match two years ago.

"Ronaldo may be the best player of Euro 2008," Czech Republic coach Karel Bruckner said.

No disagreement was heard.

If Portugal wins its first major soccer title, the 23-year-old midfielder named after Ronald Reagan likely will be the reason (his full name is Cristiano Ronaldo dos Santos Aveiro, and Reagan supposedly was his father's favourite actor).

With swivelling Elvis Presley hips and Houdini-like feet, he embarrasses defenders in a manner not seen since Diego Maradona in the 1980s. One moment, he's on the left. Then, he's on the right. Sometimes he pushes up into a striker position.

Zdenek Grygera followed him around so much, you'd think Ronaldo had magnets in those pine green boots - available in stores, by the way, starting July 1 at a US$300 suggested retail price.

Every time he got the ball and started a run, a roar rose throughout the stadium, starting with the fans closest to the field. Then the sound spread throughout one-deck Stade de Geneve like a wave.

His play is so elegant, like the rues and places in this cosmopolitan city, far more stylish than the strasses and platzes of Germanic Zurich, Basel and Bern. He sticks out among his peers, like the Jet D'Eau fountain that spurts water above Lake Geneva in the city centre.

No, make that like Mont Blanc, the Alp that towers above town.

Other players exchange jerseys with an opposing player after the match. Not Ronaldo, no sir.

When the final whistled sounded, after his last burst up the field, he exchanged congratulations with teammates and walked over to the seats on the near side. He stripped off his sweaty white shirt and gave it to a Portuguese fan, who naturally already was wearing a red Ronaldo jersey.

"The team is mature and we are on the right track. We are among the favourites," Ronaldo would say a few moments later.

He tried to talk team. We know it's about him.

As Portugal seeks calm and stability, he leaves fans around the world wondering whether he will try to break his contract with European champion Manchester United, which runs through 2012, forsaking millions of pounds in search of even more millions of euros.

He scored 42 goals in the recently completed season, the third-highest total in club history behind Denis Law (46) and Ruud van Nistelrooy (44). It wasn't just the total. It was how he scored.

This has a chance to be his Euros. Germany, the Netherlands and Spain look to be the biggest obstacles in the knockout phase. But the way he's playing, there's no stopping Ronaldo.

So Ronaldo will once again prove himself as the best footballer of the year.

Pic 1..... Wayne Rooney and Christiano Ronaldo - who is better? leave a comment.

Personally I can't decide who is better. Christiano is on fire at the minute, scoring with every kind of goal from every angle and tricks to bamboozle the finest of defenders. Wayne has always been brilliant, right from the very start everyone could see he was special. If you had to rely on one player and only 1 player I think you'd want Wazzer there as he has Man Utd red running through his once blue veins.

Mixed messages from Ronaldo cloud United triumph

MOSCOW (AFP) - The one cloud on Manchester United's horizon after their Champions League triumph here is the continuing uncertainty over the future of their most valuable asset, Cristiano Ronaldo.

As he has done consistently for the last year, the 23-year-old winger issued mixed messages about his future plans in the aftermath of what was a rollercoaster night for him in the Luzhniki Stadium.

Within minutes of having declared, "I am going to stay - there is no way I'm leaving after this," Ronaldo was qualifying that commitment with a reminder that, "the future ... no one knows."

Having headed United into the lead with his first goal against Chelsea, Ronaldo went on to have his penalty in the decisive shoot-out saved by Petr Cech.

With Chelsea having converted their first four spot-kicks, Ronaldo's miss gave John Terry the chance to win the trophy for his club.

But, to the intense relief of Ronaldo, the England defender struck his shot wide. After Edwin van der Sar's save from Nicolas Anelka finally gave United their win, United's biggest star appeared overcome by emotion, collapsing to the sodden turf in tears.

Ronaldo has been a consistent target for Real Madrid and strategic leaks to the Spanish media over the last week have resulted in headlines claiming that they are close to winning their battle to persuade the Portuguese star to quit United.

United manager Sir Alex Ferguson dismissed those claims as "stupid" earlier this week and declared himself willing to wager very large amounts of money on Ronaldo doing his stepovers at Old Trafford next season.

As he is only one year into a five-year contract, it would take a combination of a world record transfer fee and a clear demand from Ronaldo himself to persuade United to give up the player.

Real reportedly would not baulk at a fee of up to 100 million pounds (120 million euros), despite his protestations of being happy in the north of England, Ronaldo did not exactly rule out a change of heart.

"I don't promise nothing, I don't promise nothing to my mum, I don't promise nothing to the supporters," he said. "I want to stay, but the future... no-one knows. I want to stay. We are going to see in the next two weeks, I don't say I make a decision."

United are reported to be preparing a new contract for Ronaldo that will ensure his brilliant form this season is recognised by him becoming the club's best-paid player.

His first-half header on Wednesday was his 42nd strike of a season which has seen him take George Best's mantle as the most prolific winger/midfield player in the club's history.

Given that record of achievement over ten months, it would have been cruel if Ronaldo had ended up being dubbed the man who cost United the chance of a second Champions League trophy.

"Sometimes life is unfair and that would have have been so unfair on the boy, given his contribution the whole season for us," reflected United boss Sir Alex Ferguson.

Ronaldo also missed a penalty in the first leg of United's semi-final win over Barcelona, but Ferguson was quick to remind any potential critics that the winger had also held his nerve on plenty of occasions this season.

"You have to remember the courage he showed when he was made to retake the penalty against Arsenal and scored again," Ferguson said, rejecting a suggestion that Ronaldo had not produced his best form in the final.

"I felt he was fantastic for us against Chelsea. When he had the ball I always felt something was going to happen for us."

Joy in Manchester, riot in London after cliffhanger

by Guy Jackson 7 minutes ago

LONDON (AFP) - Manchester United fans prepared Thursday to welcome home their heroes after a dramatic Champions League victory in Moscow, as bitterly disappointed Chelsea fans began arriving back in London.

While thousands of United fans celebrated through Wednesday night in the northwest of England after the thrilling penalty shootout victory, furious Chelsea supporters clashed with police near the club's stadium in an upmarket district of London.

After a match that finished 1-1, Dutch goalkeeper Edwin van der Sar dived to save the decisive penalty from Chelsea's Nicolas Anelka and the title of European champions was United's for the third time.

Poignantly, the victory came 50 years after a Manchester United team was decimated when eight players were killed in an air crash in snowy Munich.

Thousands of fans who had packed pubs to watch the match poured into the streets of Manchester and red-shirted strangers hugged and performed a victory jig.

"It's absolutely fantastic and a fitting tribute. I will be celebrating with a bottle of champagne if I can find one," Wendy Andrews, 52, told reporters.

But for Chelsea the defeat was bitter, as they were denied a first Champions League crown which would have justified the hundreds of millions of pounds invested by billionaire Russian owner Roman Abramovich.

The club's emotions were summed up by the distraught reaction of captain John Terry, who had to be consoled by coach Avram Grant after he missed a decisive penalty when he slipped on the rain-soaked turf.

Back in Britain, hundreds of Chelsea supporters who had been drinking heavily in bars near the club's west London stadium reacted badly to the defeat late Wednesday.

Police sprayed tear gas to quell rioting and arrested 12 people after fans pelted officers with chairs and beer glasses. Five officers suffered minor injuries in the fracas.

"Shortly after the match ended, some people became noisy and abusive and bottles and street furniture were thrown," a spokesman for London's Metropolitan Police said.

In contrast, the majority of fans from both teams behaved well in Moscow.

But there was no disguising the sadness of Chelsea's followers as they touched down in Britain.

"I just burst into tears when Terry missed that penalty," said 18-year-old student Andrew Whelton after his flight arrived at Stansted airport.

The victorious United team were due back home late Thursday, but their arrival would not be followed immediately by the traditional victory parade through the streets.

City councillors decided last week to postpone any parade for several weeks after riots flared in the city during and following the UEFA Cup final between Scottish club Rangers and Russia's Zenit St Petersburg.

Manchester United chief executive David Gill said it was unfortunate that a parade was not on the cards immediately but that the club was considering its options.

"We were planning for that and then unfortunately some of the issues that came out of the UEFA Cup game a week last Wednesday meant that, in discussions with the two councils and (police), it was felt it was not appropriate to hold one," BBC online quoted him as saying.

"No doubt we will celebrate with our fans over the course of the summer months, we hope."

British newspapers handed the accolades to goalkeeper Van der Sar, with The Sun tabloid dubbing him "Van der Tsar," while the Mirror said his performance was "From Russia with Glove".

The Daily Telegraph's main football writer, Henry Winter, said the victory was "a beautiful way for United to mark the 50th anniversary of Munich, but what a brutal way for such an honest pro as John Terry to be treated by the sporting gods."
